families and each other.PRN - as neededWinghaven Lab Day Shift
Performs phlebotomy, processes patient specimens and performs
patient registration. Utilizes Laboratory computer system. Prepares
specimens to be sent to reference laboratories. Maintains
department inventory and operates and maintains equipment. Performs
various clerical duties. - Adheres to patient identification,
laboratory safety, and department policies and procedures. -
Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with
our mission and values. -Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time
Spent -1.Safety/Risk Management: Maintains an environment for
employees, patients, medical staff, and visitors that promote
safety consciousness in order to achieve a safe physical
environment. A. Complies with Hospital and department -Infection
Control guidelines.B. Adheres to chemical hygiene policies.C.
Follows confidentiality policy/procedure.D. Adheres to hospital
wide and department specific safety regulations.E. Initiates
quality improvement reports, and participates in quality
improvement audits as necessary.F. Creates a safe and clean work
environment.G. Utilizes the appropriate safety engineering
devices/personal protective equipment. (10%) -2. Coordination of
Services: Coordinates activities, which allow quality work within a
timely manner.A. Functions efficiently and effectively in pertinent
areas during normal operations and computer 'downtimes.'B. Acts as
a preceptor of coworkers and non-laboratory personnel up to and
including sign off of orientation checklists at the task level.C.
Assures all services are carried out accurately, efficiently,
timely and optimally safe.D. Stocks area, monitors expiration dates
of supplies, and alerts appropriate personnel when supplies are
low.E. Receives, labels and stores supplies accurately and in a
timely manner.F. Fill orders from customers for lab supplies.G.
Orders reagents, supplies and instrument consumables in a timely
manner to insure continuous service.H. Coordinates services and
resources with laboratory, other department and non-laboratory
personnel in a timely manner (i.e. specimens, supplies, reports,
etc). -I. Functions as technical resource to physicians and
employees.J. Works independently, covering all aspects of the
job.K. Serves as the lead coworker of the area.L. Assists employees
with trouble shooting problems and acts as a resource in problem
resolution. (15%) -3. Primary Aspects of the Job: Exhibits
organizational skills and a conscientiousness which allows for
precise and accurate results in a timely manner.A. Performs various
types of LIS/HIS registration on patients and/or specimens per
hospital and laboratory policy.B. Demonstrates proper time
management skills and priority setting, and multi tasking
abilities.C. Collects and/or assists with collection of patient
specimens (to include blood, urine, Autologous blood, etc) in a
timely manner, following approved procedure with technical
expertise. - - - -1. Utilizes equipment proficiently. - - - -2.
Assures positive patient identification. - - - -3. Adheres to
procedures for special and age related requirements. - - - 4.
Verifies tests requested to tests ordered and obtained. - - - 5.
Evaluates specimen acceptability. - - - -6. Labels specimen
correctly. - - - 7. Verifies work in a timely manner.D. Processes
specimens received accurately and promptly. - - - 1. Computer
entry. - - - 2. Confirm interpretation of physician orders. - - -
3. Confirm orders with specimen. - - - 4. Screen samples for
acceptability. - - - 5. Takes appropriate action for unsuitable,
unacceptable, mislabeled specimens. - - - -6. Directs specimens to
proper departments and individuals in a timely manner.E.
Appropriately prepares specimens for transportation to other
clinical laboratories for testing. - - - 1. Maintains accurate
records.F. Performs limited waived tests and procedures on
biological and environmental materials using automated equipment or
manual methods following established laboratory and testing - - - -
- procedures. (These tests include bleeding times, finger stick
glucose, microbiology set-ups and others as authorized). - - - 1.
Performs work accurately and cost effectively. - - - 2. Evaluates
specimen acceptability. - - - 3. Verifies work in a timely manner.
- - - 4. Prepares and maintains reagents and solutions.G. Performs
quality control and equipment maintenance. - - - 1. Maintains
proper quality control records. - - - 2. Documents corrective
action for unacceptable results. - - - 3. Performs preventive
maintenance on equipment. - - - -4. Performs work accurately and
cost effectively.H. Creates and uses work aid documents correctly
and routinely and in a timely manner (pending, batch, error,
etc).I. Performs various clerical duties to include but not limited
to: - - -1. Sending out reports. - - 2. Typing as necessary. - - 3.
Faxing reports. - - -4. Filing.J. Identifies both operational and
technical problems and refers problems to Supervisor or Manager as
required.K. Models professional and customer focused behaviors.
(45%) -4. Communication Management: Maintains good quality
relations between staff, patients, physicians and other departments
to promote a good working environment.A. Handles inquiries
regarding procedures and test results.B. Answer telephone in a
friendly manner to include: - - - 1. Routing calls to proper
location. - - - 2. Taking messages when needed. - - - 3. Answering
questions. - - - 4. Making appointments. - - - 5. Giving verbal
results. - - - 6. Give accurate instructions (by phone or in
person) to patients or physician office personnel regarding proper
specimen collection and patient preparation. - - - 7. Documents
verbal orders according to procedure.C. Communicates and enters
into computer system test results appropriately, accurately and in
a timely manner. - - - 1. Documents communication of critical
values as required.D. Remains current with departmental meeting
minutes and other required reading.E. Performs various computer
duties to include: - - 1. Report generation and distribution. - -
-2. Maintenance of printers. - - 3. Generation of computer error
reports. - - 4. Generation of computer credits.F. Reviews
appropriate technical and/or operational procedures annually;
participates in updating and writing technical and/or operational
procedures. (20%) -5. Technology: Maintains equipment in order to
provide a continuous level of quality in test results.A. Performs
laboratory and hospital computer functions with accuracy and
promptness (i.e. receipt and verification, order entry, inquiries,
labels, etc). - - - 1. Remains knowledgeable of downtime policies
and procedures. - - - 2. Monitors, interprets and resolves error
log.B. Performs hospital computer functions with accuracy and
promptness (i.e. patient registration, charges, credits, etc).C.
Maintains a working knowledge of personal computer, if
applicable.D. Performs routine maintenance on centrifuges.E.
Troubleshoots computer functions and equipment problems. - - - 1.
Reports instrument malfunctions and performs minor repairs. - - -
-2. Calls service representative or technical hot-line as
necessary.F. Attends in-service training on new equipment and
procedures.G. Remains current in Laboratory developments though
participation in continuing education and self-study (5 hours per

required. -Certification requiring educational maintenance by the
